Thrush, also known as itching yeast, is a fungal infection of the mouth. It is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans (the same one that causes diaper rash and vaginal yeast infections). The most commonly prescribed medication for thrush is a liquid antifungal such as Nystatin which is given several times a day until the infection clears. However, there are certain nutritional supplements that could also be of help. For example, caprylic acid, a short-chain fatty acid, helps to kill yeast. In addition, lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are friendly bacterial that help to clear the body of fungus. With these, you will need to start with smaller doses and gradually increase to the recommended amount. Simply follow the directions on the box, based on the manufacturers’ dosing and recommendations. Aloe Vera gel has also been shown to have antifungal properties. You will need to use a food-grade product for this purpose.
