Do Online Piano Lessons Really Work?

I’ve hung around in music forums… (I’m always the one by myself at the bar). And I’ve overheard the classic conversations about everything from the pentatonic scale to the pick of destiny.

Something I hear a lot is the question ‘but do online piano lessons really work? I mean, can I actually get good at playing the piano through an online course?’.

Here’s my answer. Yes. And no.

That’s not an answer! (I hear you cry) And yes it is! And no it is not…

Enough of that! What I mean is that yes, you can learn to play if you are self-disciplined and able to research and fill in your own gaps with knowledge available on the internet and in forums.

No, if you want to be given what you need to know in a condensed form, a step at a time. If this is the case then piano lessons with an actual teacher cannot be beaten.

What an Interesting Salesman

Today was probably the weirdest experience I have ever had with a salesman. When I went to Guitar Center to look at some digital pianos, I asked him for some help. We talked for a bit until he recommended a site to me. Rather than trying to sell me something there, he told me to go to this site:

What’s so odd about this is that salesmen are always trying to sell. That’s how they got the name, “salesman”. Instead, this guy told me to go to a website rather than trying to sell me something. The site isn’t his. It’s actually a relatively simple site. It gives reviews and cheap prices, but I still can’t help but wonder if he was actually trying to help me.

Well, the prices were cheaper than the ones listed at Guitar Center so in the end, I did order it online. This is all thanks to that mysterious salesman, whom I will never meet again.

A Great CD Sleeve

We all know that CD sales are dropping and it’s becoming harder for artists to shift physical copies of albums. Therefore some artists are looking for cool and innovative ways to sell their physical formats. I came across a great example the other day. There was a Hip-Hop artist called Freeway whose album was made up of custom designed dollar bills, which opened up into a wallet design, which in turn held the CD. Then inside there was a custom credit card which was in fact a ticket to a free download of instrumentals for the album. I thought this was a great idea and rightfully the design and take upon this approach saw it spread through the internet like wildfire. This is a great example of someone who has really thought outside of the box and hopefully will shift quite a few albums as it must have been quite costly to produce.

Hearing Loss Doesn’t Stop the Music

For some music fans who adore playing instruments, hearing loss hasn’t stopped them from enjoying music and trying to learn how to play guitar. For example, Charles Mokotoff, a classical guitarist living in Potomac, Maryland has created a life of music by obtaining multiple college level degrees in music and has played at various international locales like Hong Kong and Singapore. Now in his mid-fifties, he hasn’t been able to hear since the age of fifteen when he lost his hearing suddenly in both ears while his body was attempting to fight off an infection. He and his doctors were unable to determine whether the virus itself caused the hearing loss or if it was something related to the medication he had been on at the time.

Even though his hearing loss greatly impacted his life, he was still able to continue his studies in learning the guitar and even spent time in various badly put together rock bands that he and his friends often joined for fun. For years into his adulthood Motokoff hid his hearing loss in a variety of ways and not only traveled around the world to perform but also gave lessons for years. He was unsure whether people would want to hire him if they knew he had a hearing aid. A few decades ago Motokoff decided to stop hiding his hearing loss and went to work at a center for deaf kids in Massachusetts. He then moved onto a post at a university and eventually became fluent in American Sign Language.

The Schecter Hellraiser Explained

Schecter makes some pretty decent guitars and I only just recently got my first Schecter Hellraiser guitar from a guitar store in my town. I was fortunate to have all the different Hellraiser models available at the guitar shop for me to try. I have always loved the strat shaped body so eventually chose the C1 Hellraiser. The thick mahogany bodies have a very LP sort of tone to them but because they’re equipped with EMG powered pickups, they can really hit the mid to high range tones as well.

If you’re into playing heavily distorted tone music then the Schecter Hellraiser teamed up with a high gain amp, such as a Mesa Boogie Mark ii, can really melt the paint off the walls. I also chose the model with the Floyd Rose tremolo system, which really sounds great with the locking Schecter-designed tuners. I haven’t had any trouble with my guitar going out of tune over long gig sessions.

Beat Making – from the MPC Days to Now

For a long time, the Akai MPC range of music production centers was where it was at, when it came to making rap beats. The top beat maker professionals couldn’t get enough of these compact sequencing machines, throughout the 1990s.

And you know that there are still some of these machines in constant beat making use, right now. You know, beat makers often get attached to their way of working.

True, when they first arrived on the scene their assignable pads and sampling were fresh and incredible with it, but it’s easy, in the days of easy PC beat making to forget how much raw effort and skill went into making beats on an MPC.

You wanted to trim the sounds, you had to really get to know the onboard editing, gently twisting knobs to get the looping and clipping just right, using just a tiny screen.

Loading and replacing individual sounds took time too, it’s not like today, with your drag and drop PC systems, where your mouse can get things done quicker than an MPC pro could find the right menu.

All I can say is, respect the people who shaped the game and those who had it a lot harder than we do right now.
