It really annoys me that at Christmas time all the feel-good people get on their high-horses with their gift giving. Actually it couldn’t be newspaper because they think newspapers are the root cause of all evil. But, oh no, they too are the in the ‘no-go capitalist’ category, controlling our minds!
Actually it doesn’t just annoy me, it drives me bloody crazy with anger. They are so hypocritical. They pin the photo of their adopted African child on their brand new $5000 dollar fridge, that they pay 10c a week towards, and make sure everybody sees (and comments) on their selflessness, their goodness. They harp on about the GFC, the ozone layer, the whales and peak oil while cruising in their petrol guzzling 4WDs.
And it’s not that I don’t want to save the world. I really do want to stop pollution, stop pain and suffering, stop neglect and understand good and evil. I do want to help all the animals and starving children and I do want a solution to the GFC and all the other environmental issues-of course I do. I don’t have the solution though but it just feels ‘off’, delusional and false to parade around as if I haven’t got my own problems and point the finger at the rest of the world, claiming I can save the world.
For example I’ve never heard my mad left-wing, environmentalist uncle be honest and say ‘I know I’m divorced, have depressed children, have a massive ego and spend money on superficial, material things BUT I do think that I have some good ideas that might be able to help the planet and contribute to saving the world that I’d like to talk about’. Instead he says ‘I’m happy, and my life is perfect and all I do every waking minute is think about the starving in Africa and how I can help, and I never buy anything material because I don’t waste my money on anything but helping others and I am going to save the world’. Yuck, it makes me sick he wouldn’t know anything about the meaning of life and how to save the world more than I would but at least I’m honest about it.
